The Problem

The Problem

Most people have no idea how many people live in the US, nor that, unbelievably, there are more guns than people.

  • A 2017 study showed 120.5 guns per 100 Americans, 3.4 times as many as the next highest western country, Canada, with 34.7 guns per
    100 people.
  • Given the significant increase in gun purchases during Covid, it is estimated there are 466M guns in America, 98% in civilian hands.
Mass shootings with AR15-type military-style automatic weapons have been proliferating almost exponentially.
  • Home-grown fearmongering and the lure of the greenback have coalesced in new and weaker gun laws.
  • There has been a dramatic increase in production and marketing by gun manufacturers of most guns, especially automatic weapons
previously reserved for the military and semi-automatic weapons boosted with bump stocks.  Apparently, for too many, money is more
important than the wellbeing of our children and of our broader society.

Deeply Disturbing

According to the CDC’s report in April 2024:

  • Firearm injuries and deaths continue to be a significant public health problem in the United States. While firearm violence and injury affect
people in all communities, some groups have higher rates of firearm injury than others.
  • Firearms are the leading cause of death of US children and teens.
  • Gun deaths up 50% in the last two years
  • 2021 gun deaths 2571, up 68% over 2000
  • Top causes of death for US children and teens
    1. Firearms – 4733
    2. Motor Vehicles – 4486
    3. Other injuries – 3782
    4. Congenital diseases – 3411

“It is a little surprising that a country like ours (USA) should have this level of gun violence,” Ali Mokdad, a professor of global health and
epidemiology at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, told NPR. “If you compare us to other well-off countries, we really stand out.” Not a good thing!
